Visits by Bishop Donald
Some are wondering when the new Bishop will visit this area. The answer is he has already spoken to the Diocesan Centurions gathering in Titchmarsh church, and at 10.30 am October 10 he will take the service at St Peter’s Oundle – we’re all invited and children will be catered for (hence no services here)
I can also supply details of 18 October when he speaks at Diocesan Evangelical Fellowship in Oundle
On October 21 he joins Rural Theology Day in Aldwincle and on January 18 Deanery Synod in Fotheringay

Reducing Church Overheads
Churchwardens may have to spend out on caring for our churches, but they also scrutinise what unnecessary costs can be avoided. Currently insurance is a major concern with our 7 churches spending over £10,000pa on premiums and the churches in the Diocese spending over £600,000pa. Some insurance cover is clearly necessary but not everywhere needs the same kind of policy. We are working with a group of Diocesan experts to find ways of significantly reducing this burden.
Wadenhoe House Fete Thank Yous
Because the 7 churches Fete took place just after the last Pink Sheet was published, this is a belated note to say thank you to all concerned. The day was much appreciated by many and raised a total of about £2,200 divided between 6 of the parishes as Titchmarsh also had their own very successful Fete soon after.

Church Roof
Work on the new roof will begin on September 27th and continue until after Christmas. We shall try to maintain normal church life as far as possible (i.e. in the chancel) – but not on Christmas Eve. Fortunately there have been no requests for weddings during these months although scaffolding would make an interesting backdrop to the photos!
We are trying to obtain grants to supplement funds in hand –but donations would also be a real help as there are other things to do once the roof is repaired. The Treasurer Rodney Sinclair at Fairhope, Pilton Rd, Wadenhoe can supply more details
The Cream Tea Season at Wadenhoe Village Hall runs to the end of September on Sundays & Bank Hols at 3 - 5pm. Once again volunteers would be appreciated to help with these. Please contact Catherine Belton 720751 to find out more.
New and exciting experimental project with the New Perspectives Theatre Company.
The Falling Sky is based on a wonderful and very moving play about 12 extraordinary months in the life of an English village, which has been written by Brendan Murray.
A new audio version of the play has been recorded and Wadenhoe is one of 5 villages in the UK that has been asked to trial this new format where the “audience” listen to the play on a set of headphones as they walk round the village.
The play is not based on buildings or characters in Wadenhoe ~ but there are some very striking similarities!
Because the actors on this project only had to commit to the time that it takes to record a radio play (rather than a tour round the UK) it has been possible to secure a fantastic cast that is headed up by Kate Adams, Stephen Middleton, Julian Glover, Stephanie Cole and Amanda Root.
The play lasts for 100 minutes and we have planned the walk so that it takes you through some of the most beautiful parts of Wadenhoe, with resting places along the way, and conveniently finishing at the pub!
You will be able to ring and book the time of your own individual performance any time between 10am and 7pm.
There are 10 headsets and so we thought that it would be great fun for you to arrange to listen to the play with family and friends.
The dates are from Wednesday 25th August to Monday 30th August (the Bank Holiday)
Each member of the “audience” will be asked for £5 as a contribution for their “ticket”. Do please email me or ring Stephen H on 01832 720093 if you are interested in coming along and we can schedule a time for your performance to start.

Subjects such as, "is there more to life than this?" and "why did Jesus die" are presented by live speakers, and then discussed in small groups over coffee. The next course starts on Tuesday 28th September with the Alpha Supper, an informal, social setting that provides a chance to hear what Alpha is all about.

Oundle with Ashton Parish Picnic
Our Parish Picnic was held after the 10.30 service on Sunday 25th July at Barnwell Country Park. After the food, the children disappeared on a Nature Trail. When they returned, Dave Harding organised
us in his own brand of games. We had great fun playing hockey with 2 balls and long cylindrical pieces of foam, levelling adults and children to the same level of skill. To cool down, there was a sort of netball game in which two water-bombs were thrown between team members and goals scored by throwing the water-bombs into bowls held by our team goalkeepers.
Jeremy would have been proud of the fast and furious game of cricket, during which it was the bowler who was out, knocked over by a ball off one young man’s bat. All this activity was too much for some of us oldies and we settled down to a brain-straining quiz where correct answers were more by luck than knowledge! A very enjoyable time was had by all ages and our thanks must go to Dave Harding for organising the activities.
50th Wedding Anniversary
On Saturday 17th July, John and Joyce Tompkins celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a service of thanksgiving at St. Peter's Church, Oundle. They both spoke movingly about how they met (something to do with iced buns - ask them!) and of the part their faith has played in their life together. The singing was led by a worship band formed by members of their family. Afterwards, everyone celebrated with a drink and some cake before a family lunch.
Marching in Step
The theme of the Family Service was ‘Marching in Step with Jesus’. To help illustrate this, during his talk Dave Harding had arranged for some air cadets to come and give marching lessons to som
e of the children and Steve Cunningham, who picked it up very quickly.
The band and the children’s singing group led the worship songs with gusto. We look forward to the next Family Service in September.
Invasion of Rainbows
On Wednesday 7th July, St. Peter’s was invaded by a host of Rainbows. They had come from the pre-school of that name to search for areas of the church – the organ, the altar, pulpit, etc. Happily, they managed to find everything and with help completed their worksheets. It was good to hear their voices echoing round the church.
Congratulations to Simon Hicks from the St. Peter's Church family as he has been accepted for Reader Training. He had begun training as a Methodist Lay Preacher but has transfered to training within the Anglican Church. His training begins at the beginning of September.
Tim and Kat tie the Knot

July 3rd was suitably beautiful and sunny for the wedding of two members of our Church family. Tim and Kat tied the knot in a service that beautifully combined British and American traditions – even including a brand new setting of the hymn ‘Jerusalem’ (Mr and Mrs Bell will explain if you ask). Tim and Kat – we pray for God’s blessing on you and for many happy years ahead.
Ross is accepted for Ordination Training
Morning all!
Just to let you know that we received the outcome of the selection panel today and that Ross has been recommended for training. We’ve attached a vision of the future to inspire your prayers.
And so – at the beginning of August, we will all move to Bristol and in September Ross will kick-off 2 years of Ordination training (or vicar factory as my friend likes to call it) at Trinity College.
This gives us 3 weeks to sort out suitable housing and schooling in Bristol, before we have a week at New Wine (see http://www.new-wine.org/summer) and then return to Oxford and move the next week (August 2-4).
THANK GOD
· For guiding us and opening up this new direction
· For the faithful prayer and support of family and friends – through this whole process, we have had a real sense of peace, your prayers have really held us.
PLEASE PRAY
· We are going down to Bristol on Wednesday (7th) to look at houses and schools. Please pray with us that something suitable becomes available...and quickly!
· This is another move for the girls – please pray that God will be close to them and that they will not be anxious about uprooting and building new friendships again.
· We are keen that Sonia does as much study as possible over the next 2 years (because as you know, our style is to work very closely together). The Diocese is keen for Sonia to get a paid job instead. Please pray for our discussions with the Bishop on Tuesday (6th) about this.
Thanks for all your love and encouragement over recent months. Your prayers are HUGE!
Lots of love,
Ross & Sonia
(Ross and Sonia were our CMS Mission Partners serving in Thailand until they returned home in December. They visited us and preached during the 10.30 service on 27th June. Their sermon can be found in the "Sermons" section of this website.)

Richard’s Sabbatical
On the 1st June Richard, our vicar, began a three month sabbatical during which he will recharge his batteries and visit other churches etc to study Minster Ministries. He began by walking from north of Newcastle along the Northumbrian coast to Berwick. He has since been spotted in Costas, looking very relaxed. He reported that he had enjoyed the walk very much but had not had the fine weather that we enjoyed at the beginning of June. He did, however manage to remain free of blisters!! Richard is looking into Minster Ministries in order to explore ways forward for the Oundle Deanery so that the churches can help each other more and Oundle be “a radiator not a drain”. Richard promises to be back in Oundle for the mens' walk to Stamford on August bank holiday Monday. On 5th September, his first Sunday, there will be a Parish Lunch to welcome him back.
Confirmation
5 Step Out Together
The 8th June saw 5 members of St Peter’s church family take another step in their Christian journey. Nidjah Bowen-Lyttelton, Tim Bell, Georgie Billings, Sue Thomas and Arwel Hopkins had been preparing for Confirmation since January. So on a Tuesday evening in early June - at a Deanery service at All Saints, Nassington along with 9 other candidates - together they confirmed their resolve to be followers of Jesus. The vicar of Nassington (and Assistant Bishop of Peterborough) the Right Reverend John Flack conducted the service and reminded candidates that it was not really he who confirmed them, but God who confirmed them - that is gave them, through His Holy Spirit, the strength to be faithful disciples of Jesus. For Kayla Borley and her family June 8th wasn’t possible. Kayla has been preparing for confirmation with the rest of the group and will be confirmed at a service later in the year.
Cricket Match
Sunday, 20th June: A warm, sunny day, the green sward with wickets pitched, a diverse band of spectators ranging in age from 8 to 80 and more, a splendid tea produced by our devoted tea-ladies, two venerable umpires and two genial teams --- so who cares about the result? (I have to say though that it was plain that the opposition had practised!!) A splendid time was had by all and everyone went home feeling we knew each other a bit better and it had been a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Congratulations to Moulton and thanks for travelling over and to all who contributed to the occasion.
Visit of Ross and Sonia Wilson
On Sunday 27th June St. Peter’s received a visit from Ross and Sonia Wilson and their three daughters. Ross and Sonia were our former Mission Partners serving with CMS in Thailand. They came home just before our current Mission Partners, John and Gillian Robinson went out. Ross is waiting after his Selection Board to hear whether he has been accepted to train as a Church of England minister. During the service, Ross and Sonia spoke on the Gospel reading, relating it to people they knew in Thailand. They challenged us to think about 3 questions:-
- - How is my perseverance?
- - What are my priorities?
- - What is my perspective in life based on?
60th Wedding Anniversary
On Tuesday 29th June Audrey and Brian Davies celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. During the 10.30 Communion service they were called to the front to be congratulated and we gave thanks for their marriage and prayed that they would continue to be blessed in it.

Rogation
In the absence of fields in the middle of Oundle, Rogation Sunday saw a group of stalwart walkers set off for Barnwell Country Park to hold a service led by Richard, our Vicar. We walked round the park, stopping to sing hymns, listen to readings and pray for the land and our use of it.
Traditionally this is the time of year when country parishes “beat the bounds” and pray for the crops to be blessed. We arrived back at the Kingfisher Lodge for a welcome hot drink. The weather looked rather threatening at times but the sun shone and the large clouds skudded across the sky, giving us a pleasant walk.
60th Wedding Anniversary
On May 29th, Gwen and Tony Hayward celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. The next day, during the 10.30 Communion Service, they were given the freedom of the parish with rights to indulge in dubious activities such as grazing their geese in the Market Place and abseiling from St. Peter’s Steeple. After the service they had a surprise party at Glapthorn Village Hall, attended by friends from St. Peter’s, the town and further afield.

Spring Harvest
This year about 80 members of St’ Peter’s went to Spring Harvest at Skegness, staying at the Butlins holiday complex. There was a very full programme which we could dip into as we wished. After breakfast the day started with very lively worship in the Big Top followed by a Bible Study. There were then groups divided according to different learning styles in which we could explore more deeply the issues raised. There were discussion groups on a variety of topics and prayer ministry throughout the day and we could take advantage of Butlins’ facilities – fairground, swimming pool, spa etc. In the evenings there was a choice of lively worship in the Big Top, alternative worship led by the Northumbrian Community and worship led by Gerard and Chrissie Kelly. There were even late night debates and performances by the Saltmine Theatre Company who have visited us at St. Peter’s. The children and young people also enjoyed a very full programme of activities in groups according t
o their age. The evening usually finished in the bar relaxing and getting to know each other better over a quiet drink. For some, Spring Harvest was not quite what they were used to, but an experience nevertheless. Most found it very positive and enjoyable giving us the opportunity to spend time with
each other and to have deeper conversations than is possible in the hubbub of church life.

Mothering Sunday
In preparation for the Mothering Sunday Service, the men of St’ Peter’s, aided by their children, made posies of flowers on Saturday. These were distributed among the ladies present at the service on Sunday.
Palm Sunday
The Palm Sunday service began with a procession led by Boris the donkey. The route ran from Cobthorn in West Street to the Market Place, back to New Street, down to the Wash and then to St. Peter’s. As we processed we sang hymns and stopped for readings and prayers. Boris enjoyed much attention from the children and, helped by a constant supply of apples and carrots behaved impeccably as he explored Oundle town centre. Following the procession the 10.30h Communion Service took place.

Candlemas
The church gradually filled with Year 4 pupils from all the primary schools in the Deanery, who had come to celebrate Candlemas. First there was the opportunity to get to know pupils from other schools over a biscuit and a drink as they divided into groups according to which month their birthday fell. Then the service began as each school contributed with singing, dance, and drama. Bishop John Flack was present in full regalia and he explained to the children the significance of each item that he wore. A very enjoyable time was had by all so it is hoped that this celebration will be repeated.

Follow the Star
January 28th -30th, for three nights only, the West End came to Oundle with a fabulous production of the musical, ‘Follow the Star’. St Peter’s very own impresario, Jane Webster, gathered a cast of what seemed like thousands (but actually numbered around 70) from the local schools and the St Peter’s church family. We had little tots through to teenagers singing and dancing for us. It was a splendid evening!
‘Follow the Star’ is a fantastic show that retells the story of Mary and Joseph. The rather small Gabby (the angel Gabriel) is desperate for a job so that she can grow (angels only grow taller as they do good work). Olly, who is in charge of all the angels, gives Gabby the task of finding Mary and telling her of her forthcoming baby. Having found Mary, the over excited Gabby shows herself to Joseph, something Olly had strictly forbidden. However, Gabby is given one more chance and told to be the star that the three wise men follow. The other angels, Lofty, Jelly and Angy, have to make the three wise men follow the star. During their journey, the wise
men meet the evil Herod and inform him of their trip. On hearing this, Herod decides that this new baby, who is to be king, must die. The play closes with an epic battle. The good guys are victorious and Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus are sent on their way with a happy song.
The youngsters all performed so well and it was great to see the teenagers acting and working behind the scenes on staging and choreography. Many people were involved in making ‘Follow the Star’ such a success, helping out with costumes, lighting, make up, music, sound and publicity. One of the joys of Oundle and St Peters is that we live in community and all ages and stages were involved in making ‘Follow the Star’ such a delight and success. BRAVO!
