Karin Voth Harman (Curate) and David Teall (Benefice Reader) also serve on the committee.  Sidespersons for 2013/2014 will be Lesley Tyers and Leigh Holding.  Thanks were given to all who help and support the church in anyway.

A copy of the Annual Report and Accounts for St Nicholas Church 2012 have been left on table at the back of the church.

Second Annual King’s Cliffe Plant Fayre

News Category:

Benefice

A huge thank you to all those who attended and supported the plant sale at ‘The Walnuts’ on the 12th May.  A tremendous £1521 was raised on the day!

As predicted the heavens opened and an impromptu rendition of ‘Singing in the Rain’ was considered.  We even contemplated taking shelter in the aptly re-named ‘bird palace’ donated to the raffle. But, in true ‘Cliffe’ style, well over 150 people brought out their brollies and purchased a fantastic array of lovingly nurtured plants kindly donated by the King’s Cliffe Gardeners’ Association.

Sadly, many a diet bit the dust thanks to a deliciously tempting (and never-ending) supply of homemade cakes, biscuits and hot drinks.  The village tots made some very scary insect fridge magnets, while the older children were getting in early practice for a rainy Wimbledon.  Some super raffle prizes were generously donated by local businesses.

Finally, thank you to the wonderful ladies and gentlemen who helped (in every capacity) to make the day a success, especially to the Macleod’s for offering their beautiful garden as a venue.

Benefice

The Coffee Morning last month was held at the home of Heather and Brian Cromie where plenty of coffee and homemade biscuits were enjoyed by everyone.  Many of us walked around their beautiful and interesting garden.  Thank you to Heather and Brian for their hospitality.  We were able to contribute £120 to the church funds.

Douglas passed away on 21st March 2013 and was laid to rest on Tuesday 9th April 2013, three days before his 73rd birthday, at Elstow Abbey Church of St Mary and St Helena, Elstow, where he had been a regular bell ringer in the past and assisted with pollarding the avenue of trees through the church yard.

The funeral service was conducted by the Revd Roger Chapman.  Family mourners included: twin sons Adam and Mark Walmsley representing Gabriel, grandson, Mrs Enid Goodman, sister, Mrs Margaret Cockburn, long time friend, Mrs Fiona Whalley, niece, Ms Zoe Gates, Mr & Mrs Carl Goodman, nephew representing Mr & Mrs Jason Goodman.

Mark gave a tribute to their father from his early life growing up in Bulwick and his Civil Engineering career both in the UK and in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He spoke of his hobbies as a keen stamp collector, a member of the Bee Keepers Association and an ardent gardener. Douglas had a very keen interest in Free Masonry and had attended Lodges in various parts of the world. Adam read a passage from Corinthians Chapter 13, v1-13.  Family were invited to stand by the coffin during the closing prayer, the Nunc Dimittis, Luke 2. 29.  The final committal was conducted at Bedford Crematorium where the strains of Johnny Cash’s “I’ll walk the line” played out the final act of farewell to a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, devoted friend and neighbour.

The family would like to thank everyone for the generous donations to the charity “Fight for Sight” in memory of Douglas who donated his cornea.
