International Refugee Trust - Coffee Morning
A coffee morning was held on Saturday 14th February at the home of Churchwarden Ursula Wide to raise funds for Glapthorn Church and the International Refugee Trust - a charity which specialises in relief work among those who have been displaced by war or famine, especially in Africa.
A good crowd of about 60 attended.
IRT Administrator Ros Wild gave a moving account of IRT's work.
The International Refugee Trust's Ros Wild
IRT's website describes the Moyo Home in Northern Uganda:
"Without this home abandoned and orphaned refugee babies would die. It is run by the Sacred Heart Sisters who, with their care assistants, provide a loving environment, food and basic medical care. Some of the babies are very ill when they arrive at the home, but with care and nourishment most are nursed back to health.
It is the only home of its kind for many miles because looking after babies is hugely labour-intensive and therefore expensive. IRT ensures that the home has enough money to pay for food, clothing, nursery schooling and wages of the care assistants. The living quarters of the care assistants are in a very bad state of repair and we are currently fundraising in order that their accommodation can be rebuilt. For more information on this, download our appeal for the Moyo Babies' Home Care Assistants' accomodation from the Publications page.
The Sisters try to find homes for the babies, but if they cannot the children move on to the Redeemer Children’s Home when they are 6 years old."

About £400 was raised on the day, split equally between the church and IRT.
An associated appeal generated further donations specifically for IRT of about £600.
Many thanks to all who helped with the organisation and food and to those who gave so generously of their time and money.
Carol Service and Supper
A congregation of nearly a hundred gathered for a service of 8 carols, 5 lessons, a compelling sermon by the Rev. Stephen Webster, and an equally compelling re-enactment of the nativity (accompanied by cornet and clarinet) by the children of Glapthorn. The singing was augmented by descant singers artfully distributed round the church to great effect.
About half the carollers then went to the Village Hall for a typically convivial Glapthorn supper.
Family Service to welcome Mark Latchford as head of Glapthorn village school
A congregation of about 40 met for the Family Service in church on 5th October 2008 to welcome Mark Latchford as head of Glapthorn's Church of England Lower School. We were also introduced to his wife Sarah (who teaches music at Oundle School and accompanied, on her keyboard, the cheerful hymn singing). Mark spoke of his enthusiasm for the role of the school in the life of the village and church.
Children from the school read to us, led some of the prayers, and ably assisted the Rev Stephen Webster with his sermon (which involved the use of a spade and the discovery of treasure).

"A small and happy Christian school in the heart of its community offering challenge and opportunity to all."
