Christmas Party 2011 - Roly Bain

Roly Bain entertained the children of Thrapston at St James Church on December 20th for a special Christmas party. As well as some slapstick routines, which had the children shouting as if they were at a pantomime, his tricks included balancing a mug of water on a pole, and (not) bursting balloons with a needle.

He performed an amazing bicycle routine mixing up parts of the bike from top to bottom and back to front, and yet still cycling at speed round the church.

Throughout he kept up a Christian message and even managed to link his old battered box with a manger for baby Jesus. The climax was a death-defying walk on a slack rope (as opposed to a tightrope). For this he was ably assisted by members of the audience.

A good time was had by all.

Bishop of Peterborough  visit December 2011

The Rt Revd Donald Allister , Bishop of Peterborough, visited St James for a Benefice Communion Service on Sunday 11 December.

Bishop Donald’s sermon focused on St Peter as the rock and referred to the fact that Peterborough has <Peter> in its name. After the service there was an informal question and answer session. He explained his role and answered some tough questions from the congregation. This included topics such as gay marriage, divorce and relationships, and the protest outside St Paul’s Cathedral. He answered firmly and clearly with obvious compassion.

A splendid lunch followed, which had been organised by Ann Worboys and her team.

An Evening with Stuart Townend June 2011

Stuart Townend came to our already beautiful Church, which was then amazingly transformed by Malcolm Burrows into a beautiful setting for 'An Evening With Stuart Townend'. I stood in the porch to greet the already excited ticket holders, and their amazement at the transformation of our Church was wonderful to see and hear. And when Stuart arrived, the atmosphere was electric. People from over 25 different churches attended, from all denominations.
The evening was a mixture of songs old and new, written by Stuart. He explained in detail how he came to write each one, what it meant to him and how they were all are set around Scripture. This gave us great insight into the man himself. When 280 people ended the evening singing <In Christ Alone> with such passion, it was amazing. For some, this was a different form of worship that they had not experienced before, but one everyone said they would like to experience again. I was privileged, along with a few others, to spend time talking to Stuart and his wife, Caroline over a drink [or two]. They are truly wonderful people of God, and put us all at ease. Stuart said he received one of the best welcomes ever from St James. After he had finished Stuart happily spent time talking to people and signing CDs and Songbooks which had been available through the stall which had done a roaring trade.
This was an amazing event for our Church, and we feel very privileged that he graced us with his presence. The Lord must be well pleased with Stuart [I know I was] The Lord was certainly in the house on the 17th, and the Spirit led us all the way. Praise the Lord.

Pause 4 Pentecost June 2011

Every year since <Hope> was started we have taken the opportunity to keep the Parish Church of St James open for 14 hours a day for a week. This year we were inspired to do this in Pentecost, to concentrate on the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians and in particular on the Fruit of the Spirit from Galatians Chapter 5. This time it was for just 4 days culminating in the Evening with Stuart Townend on 17th June. Various displays and flower arrangements adorned the church. Each day had a different focus; Prophecy, Prayer, Praise and Peace. We truly hope that everyone who came into church that week will have been blessed by the peace and tranquillity and we hope that many will have a more personal understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
Note: <Hope> in Thrapston is an ecumenical group of local Christians who work together to show the love of God in our town. For more details contact Jean Fouhy who represents < Hope> in Thrapston.
