Roly Bain entertained the children of Thrapston at St James Church on December 20th for a special Christmas party. As well as some slapstick routines, which had the children shouting as if they were at a pantomime, his tricks included balancing a mug of water on a pole, and (not) bursting balloons with a needle.

He performed an amazing bicycle routine mixing up parts of the bike from top to bottom and back to front, and yet still cycling at speed round the church.

Throughout he kept up a Christian message and even managed to link his old battered box with a manger for baby Jesus. The climax was a death-defying walk on a slack rope (as opposed to a tightrope). For this he was ably assisted by members of the audience.

A good time was had by all.

Bishop of Peterborough  visit December 2011

The Rt Revd Donald Allister , Bishop of Peterborough, visited St James for a Benefice Communion Service on Sunday 11 December.

Bishop Donald’s sermon focused on St Peter as the rock and referred to the fact that Peterborough has <Peter> in its name. After the service there was an informal question and answer session. He explained his role and answered some tough questions from the congregation. This included topics such as gay marriage, divorce and relationships, and the protest outside St Paul’s Cathedral. He answered firmly and clearly with obvious compassion.

A splendid lunch followed, which had been organised by Ann Worboys and her team.

The "Ground Force" Team were again in action this month. Cleaning drains, lopping trees and shrubs and tidying up the church grounds. This even extended to the entrance from the car park outside the church to make it more attractive to visitors.

Why not come along next time and help. You'll be rewarded with fellowship, tea/coffee and a sausage in a bun and the satisfaction of seeing the grounds look smarter.

For more details contact Richard Bonar (who can be seen at the top of some very tall ladders in one of the pictures below).

‘Mission Rescue’ Holiday Club July 2011

The theme of this year’s Holiday Club was ‘Mission Rescue’ where we became secret agents to take on a mission with Moses and God to rescue His people out of Egypt. Every morning (25 -29 July) around 120 children aged from 5 to 11 years old had great fun cracking codes, turning up in disguises, playing games, making things, singing and even doing aerobics! Most importantly we were all there to learn about God and his great love for us all.

Thanksgiving for Marriage July 2011

Parish:
Thrapston

A special service was requested by John and Di Goodman who celebrated their Golden Wedding in July. It was not specifically about their marriage, but a general thanksgiving for marriage.

Rev Charles Jefferson started by reminding those attending of words from the marriage service.
Marriage is a gift of God in creation through which husband and wife may know the grace of God.
It is given that as man and woman come together in love and trust. They shall be united with one another in heart body and mind, as Christ is united with his body the church. The gift of marriage brings husband and wife together in the delight and tenderness of sexual union and joyful commitment to the end of their lives.
It is given as the foundation of family life in which children are born and nurtured, And in which each member of the family in good times and in bad, may find strength companionship and comfort and grow to maturity in love.
Marriage is a way of life made Holy by God and blessed by the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ with those celebrating a wedding at Cana in Galilee.
Marriage is a sign of unity and loyalty which all should uphold and honour.
It enriches the society and strengthens the community.

John, Di and their family contributed towards the service along with prayers by Sue Bonar.

After the service everyone stayed for wine and cake.
