News for August 2010
We bid “Farewell”
During August St. Peter’s bade farewell to friends from within our church family and from outside. On the 22nd August Dr Rob Gwynne preached at the 10.30am Family Communion and administered the chalice for the last time here at St. Peter’s before he and Margaret moved to Fulham at the end of the following week. They will be greatly missed and we wish them well in this new chapter in their lives.
On Tuesday 31st August Father Peter from the Catholic Church of the Most Holy Name in Oundle attended the 8.30am Holy Communion service at St. Peter's. This gave representatives from St. Peter’s the opportunity to say goodbye to him and to convey to him our good wishes and prayers. It was good that Bishop John Flack was also able to join us. A card signed by many members of the congregation was given to Father Peter. In the short time that he has been in Oundle, Father Peter has made many friends and gained the respect of the members of the churches of other denominations in Oundle with whom he has worked.
ST. PETER’S MEN WALK TO STAMFORD
On Bank Holiday Monday a group of men and boys from St. Peter’s set off at 9am to walk to Stamford. The weather was kind to them, being neither too hot nor raining! With stops along the way, and much conversation and merriment, the band arrived at their destination, the Crown Hotel in Stamford, where they were met by wives and friends for a much welcome delicious meal.

UPDATE ON THE ROBINSONS’ CAR
The CMS car fund for John and Gillian Robinson (our mission partners in Thailand) raised £5,000 from members of several churches. The Robinsons were overjoyed by the generosity of all who gave and have bought a car which cost £10,000 with the help of a loan from CMS. They are responsible for repaying the £5,000 loan themselves so if anyone would still like to make a contribution, this would be most welcome. Please mark cheques “J & G Robinson Car Fund” and send to Finance Dept. CMS, Waltington Road, Oxford. OX4 6BZ
CHATTABOX
The annual Chattabox holiday club, run by OCYA, was held during the first week of August in the marquee behind Laxton Junior School.
The title this year was “Rocky’s Plaice”. The children were divided into groups with fishy names such as Whiting, Rays etc. They enjoyed dramas from Salt and Vinegar, the resident chefs, learnt loads of new songs and came home each day with crafts ranging from 3D fish on sticks to decorated plates. There were also outdoor games organised brilliantly by Dave Harding.
On the Friday afternoon, parents & siblings were invited back to the tent for tea & cake, and to see what the children had been doing, sing along to some of the songs and see the photos of the week.
On Sunday 8th August the churches in Oundle gathered together for a joint service in the Chattabox tent where the children shared some of what they had been doing during the week.
BISHOP VISITS ST. PETER'S
August began with a visit from Bishop John Flack at the Family Communion Service on Sunday 1st August. Bishop John preached from Luke 12 and later celebrated Communion. (The Oundle Editor hopes to transcribe his sermon for the Sermons section of this website when she returns from holiday.) The lesson was read beautifully by Alex Tonks and the Herring family lead our prayers. While all this was happening, there were activities in the South Transept for the children, who, at the end of the service, told us what they had been doing and showed us what they had made.
