Baptism Policy at St Peter's Church
Baptism Policy at St Peter’s
Church, Oundle
Introduction
Baptism is for
any age. The most important thing is that the parents and godparents – or, in
the case of an adult, the person to be baptised – must understand the
commitment of baptism. The promises are the most important words you could ever
say: “I turn to Christ”, “I repent of my sins”, “I renounce evil” and “I
believe and trust in Him”. In addition, there is a promise to be fully engaged
with the ongoing worshipping life of the church. As a church, we make every
effort to ensure that those making these promises fully understand their
implications. If a family wishes to give thanks for the safe arrival of a new
baby but feel they cannot make the baptism promises, then we offer a service of
Thanksgiving.
- Anyone who lives in the parish or who is on the electoral roll of the church has the right to be baptised at St Peter’s. However the clergy also have the responsibility of baptism preparation. Therefore, under Canon Law, clergy have the right to delay baptism for purposes of preparation. It is expected that everyone who requests baptism will undergo preparation.
- Baptism preparation is undertaken by clergy and laity. At the initial visit, a member of the clergy will gather details, seek to understand why baptism has been requested and talk about the meaning of baptism. At the following visit, a member of the baptism visiting team will provide the family with details of the baptism service, children’s groups and associated information about family services. A directory of e-mail addresses from these visits will be kept by the Parish Administrator and baptism families will be kept in touch with all forthcoming events on a regular basis.
- It is anticipated that the Pastoral Assistants may, in the future, take on some of the rôle of clergy-visiting regarding baptisms.
- Baptisms should take place during the 10.30am Sunday service or immediately after this service in exceptional circumstances. When a baptism takes place outside scheduled services, members of the congregation should be present to welcome the family.
- When a baptism is outside a scheduled service, there is a standard charge for the verger and organist which should be paid in cash on the day.
- In emergencies, baptisms are carried out without any preparation at the discretion of the clergy e.g. for premature babies or with the dying.
- We endeavour to keep in touch by sending each child a card on the first anniversary of their baptism.
